There are times in life when we may need to stay in bed for a while, due to illness, injury, or recovery. Even while bedbound, there are simple things you can do to reduce muscle loss, support your mental wellbeing, and help prevent complications like pressure sores.

Bed based exercise is this
type of movement

Cardio
★☆☆☆☆

Cardio

Any movement that makes you feel warmer and breathe a bit harder is good.

  • If you can’t get up, do gentle movements in bed a few times a day.
  • If you can, try getting out of bed to change position, sit in a chair, or move about if you can.
Strength
★★★☆☆

Strength

Staying in bed weakens muscles, so any movement helps.

  • Move your arms and legs when and if you can.
  • Sit up if possible and get out of bed as soon as it’s the right time to do so.
  • If you’re permanently bed bound, small movements are still very helpful.
Balance

Balance

Bed-based exercises can still help your balance.

  • Small arm and/or leg movements keep your muscles active.
  • Gentle core movements help your body stay steady.
  • If you can’t get up, these exercises help keep your balance system working.
